Antique Japanese storage box, circa 1900–1930, made of softwood, likely sugi (Japanese cedar). It has a dark, hand-rubbed stained finish worn to a soft patina.
One half of the two-board top lifts out. Battens on its underside seat it inside the box, and a hand-forged iron hasp and rolled staple on one end hold it shut. A finger hole at the seam lets you lift it. Both ends have recessed panels under cloud-form cut-outs, which serve as hand grips for carrying. The box is nail-constructed, and the underside is unfinished.
It's a simple, honest utilitarian piece with real wabi-sabi character. Use it as storage, a riser, or a sculptural accent on a shelf, console, or hearth.
Attribution is based on construction, hardware, and form. There are no maker's marks.

The two top boards have separated slightly at the seam, and there is fiber loss around the finger hole. The edges and corners are worn and chipped, with losses to the stain and a small crack at one corner of the underside. The case has scattered scratches, dings, and old nail holes. The iron hasp has surface oxidation and works as intended. Light surface grime is present inside. The box is structurally sound. less
