Vintage Lane cedar chest made in Altavista, Virginia, dated April 15, 1966, based on Lane's reverse-read serial number system. Style No. 2705-18.
The front has six raised panels over a full-width drawer, which is disguised as two drawer fronts and has two cast brass-tone bail pulls. The top is framed and book-matched, with a fine ebonized inlay line. Lane's signature fly-speck distressed finish runs throughout, and the piece stands on tapered faceted feet. The sides are planked.
The lid lifts to an aromatic red cedar interior with a chrome support arm, and it carries the original "Aroma-Tite Pressure Tested" stamp. The original $1,000 moth damage guaranty label is still inside the lid. The drawer is lined in green felt.
It works well at the foot of a bed, as an entry bench, or as a living room storage piece. Mediterranean and Spanish Revival styling makes a warm counterpoint to modern or traditional rooms.
The original automatic-locking latch has been removed for safety, in line with Lane's CPSC recall, and the chest is sold without a lock. The lid closes and opens freely.

There is light residue and scuffing on the front left corner, scattered minor nicks and small white marks on the front panels, edge wear to the base molding and feet, and light surface wear to the top. The cedar interior is clean and still aromatic. The drawer slides smoothly, and its felt lining is intact. The original automatic-locking latch has been removed for safety, in line with Lane's CPSC recall, and the chest is sold without a lock. The back is unfinished cedar and hardboard, as made. less
