The central scene depicts a traditionally dressed figure carrying a birdcage, surrounded by scrolling foliage and flowers—a charming bit of narrative detail that gives the piece the character of an object collected on one's travels.

The square holder incorporates matchbox compartments beneath the tile, with striking surfaces accessible along all four sides. At just four inches square, it is particularly good for those small places where an ordinary matchbox feels too utilitarian: beside a candle on a drinks table, on a library mantel, or near the fireplace in an English country-inspired sitting room.

I especially like pieces such as this because they make an everyday ritual feel considered. It is decorative without being precious and useful without looking merely functional. Matches are included.
