Two drawers span a gently projecting central section, each fitted with original brass bail handles on sunburst rosettes and keyhole escutcheons tied with neoclassical ribbon bows. Canted front corners are set with brass filled fluting that catches the light along the case, and the commode rises on tall square tapered legs that give it an airy, graceful stance.
The Directoire style emerged in the final years of the 18th century, carrying the neoclassical vocabulary of Louis XVI toward a purer, more restrained expression of line and proportion. Mahogany, prized in France for its rich color and fine grain, paired naturally with gleaming brass in these elegant neoclassical designs. Throughout the 19th century, French cabinetmakers continued reviving and reinterpreting these styles, celebrating the refined legacy of French furniture making.
Slender in scale and elegant in silhouette, the commode is beautiful in an entry hall, beside a bed, or against a living room wall as a small console. Paired with a gilt mirror or a contemporary painting above, it brings quiet French elegance to both classic and modern interiors.
Circa 1880.
