The composition centers on a young, red-haired woman seated on the left in a deep blue coat with white cuffs, holding a sleeping puppy on her lap and an open book in her hands while looking directly out at the viewer. Beside her stands a young girl in a white dress with a prominent dark blue bow tied at the back, facing away from the viewer to peer through heavy vertical iron bars down into the steam-filled railway tracks below. The painting is housed in a substantial, heavily ornamented composition gilded frame featuring deeply molded scrolling acanthus leaves, rocaille flourishes, and elaborate stylized corner details.
