McCartney began painting in 1982 when he turned 40, viewing it as a private, pressure-free creative outlet away from the intense public spotlight of pop stardom. Heavily influenced by Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Surrealism, the works feature vivid color palettes, heavy and scraped textures, and gestural brushwork. Living near the renowned Dutch-American abstract expressionist Willem de Kooning in the US, McCartney befriended him. De Kooning helped free McCartney from the pressure of having a preconceived plan, teaching him to paint intuitively for himself rather than an audience.
