An attractive antique Indian octagonal lidded box, dating to the late 19th century. Finely decorated throughout with hand-worked repoussé and chased floral and foliate motifs.
The raised lid features a central stylized flower surrounded by radiating leaf and palmette designs, while the sides are richly ornamented with repeating traditional foliate patterns. Constructed of copper or a copper-rich brass alloy, with a warm brown surface and naturally developed dark patina.
Boxes of this type were traditionally used in India for storing paan/betel ingredients, spices, small valuables, or personal objects. The substantial age patina, hand-worked decoration and slightly irregular construction give the piece considerable decorative character.
