A French country commode carved with wedding symbolism, probably first half of the 19th century. Each of the two drawer fronts carries pairs of billing love birds perched on woven baskets, daisy rosettes, scrolling leaf sprays and a laurel wreath framing the keyhole, all inside a hand-notched border. Doves on a basket stood for fidelity and plenty on French marriage furniture, and the uneven, hand-cut carving shows a village maker's hand rather than a factory. The solid oak case is pinned with wooden pegs and stands on slim Louis XVI square tapered legs with incised panels, the lighter, leggier form the French call a sauteuse. Pine back boards.
Approx. 48" W x 20" D x 32" H.
Restored: refinished top with surface wear and water marks; drawers later lined in Provencal-print cotton; top escutcheon a later replacement, lower escutcheon missing; old worm holes and shrinkage splits to the side and back boards; light carving wear consistent with age.
