Brussels was one of the important centers of tapestry production in Flanders, where large-scale woven textiles were created to decorate sophisticated interiors. This surviving fragment has been thoughtfully repurposed as a decorative pillow, allowing the centuries-old tapestry to continue to be appreciated in a functional form while retaining the character of the original weaving.
The antique wool tapestry forms the entire decorative front, displaying a richly developed arrangement of oversized fruits surrounded by dense leaves, vines, curling stems, and smaller botanical forms. Several large golden fruits occupy the center of the composition, while a cluster of smaller rounded fruits appears above them. At the right is a particularly striking large ribbed fruit rendered in alternating shades of deep burgundy, muted red, and golden beige. The irregular placement and different scales of the fruits give the composition a natural sense of abundance rather than the appearance of a simple repeating pattern.
The colors are especially characteristic of the pillow's aged beauty. The tapestry combines deep teal, blue-green, forest green, olive, antique gold, mustard, ochre, camel, tan, beige, taupe, burgundy, muted red, dusty rose, coral, and warm brown.
