Brussels was an important European center of tapestry production during the 17th century, and textiles from this period were valued for their sophisticated weaving, extensive color palettes, and ability to create complex imagery through carefully arranged colored yarns. Here, the surviving fragment has been repurposed as a decorative pillow, allowing the historic wool textile to be displayed and appreciated in a contemporary interior.
The design reads today as strongly abstract, with large overlapping areas of color rather than a clearly identifiable complete scene or individual motif. Broad sweeping shapes, angular passages, irregular curves, and fragmented linear details move across the surface. A particularly striking deep teal and blue-green form dominates the lower-right portion, balanced by smaller dark teal shapes and muted green passages toward the opposite side. These cooler colors contrast beautifully with the expansive fields of antique gold, ochre, mustard, camel, tan, taupe, warm brown, muted olive, sage green, dusty rose, and soft gray.
Because this pillow was made from a fragment of a much larger historic tapestry, the original representational context is no longer completely visible. This cropping gives the composition its unusually modern abstract appearance and makes the piece especially interesting: a centuries-old European textile can visually resemble a modern abstract work when removed from its original larger composition. The irregular boundaries between the colors, visible woven texture, and subtle tonal variations reveal the handmade character of the original tapestry.
The decorative front is woven wool, while the reverse is finished in a simple neutral cotton backing that allows the historic textile to remain the focal point. The pillow is filled with feathers, providing a soft and substantial form.
