Through elegant draftsmanship and understated humour, Gavarni offers another perceptive glimpse into the manners and contradictions of Parisian bourgeois society. This charming composition depicts a fashionably dressed husband and wife promenading together. The gentleman, impeccably attired in a top hat, frock coat, and gloves, walks with self-assured dignity while his wife turns her head away in apparent disapproval or discreet observation. Beneath the image, the accompanying dialogue humorously exposes the husband's hypocrisy: he indignantly criticizes another lady's revealing neckline as indecent, only to qualify that such attire is objectionable "in the morning—but in the evening…" The exchange gently satirizes the double standards and social conventions governing nineteenth-century respectability.
