An original nineteenth-century lithograph on paper by the renowned French illustrator and social satirist Paul Gavarni, from his celebrated series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). This finely observed domestic scene exemplifies Gavarni's masterful ability to transform the subtleties of bourgeois relationships into elegant visual satire. The composition depicts a gentleman asleep in a comfortable armchair, his relaxed posture suggesting both physical ease and emotional indifference. Standing partially concealed behind the doorway, a woman watches him with an expression that combines disappointment, curiosity, and quiet reproach. Beneath the image appears a poetic quotation from the Calendrier du Tendre, lamenting the fading of romantic passion and the transformation of love into domestic routine. The contrast between the sleeping husband and the silent, observant wife encapsulates Gavarni's sophisticated commentary on the realities of marriage. Rendered with delicate tonal gradations and refined lithographic technique, the work demonstrates Gavarni's exceptional draughtsmanship and psychological insight. Rather than relying on exaggerated caricature, the artist captures subtle gestures and expressions that lend the scene both humour and emotional depth. His elegant interiors and fashionable figures remain among the finest visual records of Parisian bourgeois life during the July Monarchy. Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, 16, and printed by Aubert & Cie, this lithograph belongs to one of Gavarni's most admired series examining the complexities of married life through wit, sentiment, and acute social observation. Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression and attractive tonal quality. The sheet exhibits light overall toning, scattered foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with age. Small marginal imperfections and light surface creasing are visible, none of which materially detract from the printed image. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
