Lithograph on paper. Not signed. An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his acclaimed series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Renowned for his perceptive observations of Parisian bourgeois society, Gavarni combined refined draftsmanship with subtle humour, creating scenes that capture the complexities and ironies of everyday domestic relationships. This composition presents a husband and wife in conversation aboard a small riverboat during what was likely intended to be a leisurely excursion. The husband, elegantly dressed in formal attire with top hat and cane, stands with his back to the viewer, while his seated wife addresses him with an expression of quiet determination. The printed dialogue beneath the image humorously recounts a misunderstanding over their intended destination—Saint-Cloud versus Saint-Ouen—before the husband resigns himself to his wife's wishes, acknowledging that she invariably has her way despite promising obedience. Gavarni transforms this seemingly trivial exchange into a witty commentary on the subtle negotiations of married life. Executed with fluid lithographic technique and delicate tonal modelling, the composition displays Gavarni's remarkable ability to convey personality through posture, gesture, and restrained facial expression. The softly rendered riverside landscape provides an elegant backdrop while reinforcing the quiet intimacy of the scene. Like the finest plates from the series, the image balances humour with genuine psychological observation, elevating an ordinary domestic disagreement into a timeless study of human relationships. Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, 16, and printed by Aubert & Cie, this lithograph forms part of one of Gavarni's most celebrated suites devoted to the manners and domestic life of nineteenth-century France. Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression and strong tonal quality. The sheet exhibits light age toning, scattered foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with age. Small marginal imperfections and occasional light creasing are present but do not materially affect the printed image. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
