An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist and social commentator Paul Gavarni, from his renowned series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Through refined draftsmanship and incisive wit, Gavarni chronicled the manners, vanities, and domestic intrigues of the Parisian bourgeoisie, producing some of the most sophisticated social satires of the July Monarchy. This plate depicts a fashionably dressed young woman standing alone in a doorway, absorbed in reading a letter. At her feet rests a decorative ceramic pitcher, while the open doorway behind her introduces a sense of anticipation and mystery. Beneath the image appears a lengthy mock letter addressed to "Monsieur Charme," written in the form of a playful summons to a convivial gathering. Rich in slang and humorous exaggeration, the accompanying text exemplifies Gavarni's gift for pairing elegant imagery with witty literary satire, inviting viewers to imagine the unseen narrative behind the solitary figure. Executed with Gavarni's characteristic economy of line and subtle tonal lithography, the composition conveys both quiet intimacy and narrative tension. The restrained interior setting and carefully observed costume place the scene firmly within the domestic world that forms the central theme of the Impressions de Ménage series, where everyday moments become vehicles for humour, irony, and social commentary. Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, 16, and printed by Aubert & Cie, this lithograph forms part of one of the artist's most celebrated suites documenting nineteenth-century French domestic life. Good overall condition, with a strong, well-preserved impression. The sheet displays light overall toning, scattered foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with age. Faint creasing, light staining, and small marginal imperfections are present but do not detract from the quality of the image. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
