Through elegant draftsmanship and subtle humour, Gavarni chronicled the manners, aspirations, and domestic realities of Parisian bourgeois society, producing some of the most sophisticated social commentaries of the July Monarchy. This composition depicts a bourgeois couple walking arm in arm, the gentleman confidently leading while the elegantly dressed lady follows close behind. The gentleman carries an assortment of household utensils and domestic wares—an amusing contrast to his dignified attire—while his companion wears a fashionable bonnet and carries a parasol. The accompanying printed text humorously alludes to the romantic ideals of young women, gently mocking the contrast between dreams of marriage and the practical realities of domestic life.
