An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French illustrator and social observer Paul Gavarni, from his acclaimed series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Through wit, elegance, and acute psychological insight, Gavarni explores the complexities of bourgeois marriage, creating scenes that are at once humorous, poignant, and enduringly relevant. This composition portrays a well-dressed couple standing before a rural fortification or defensive structure. The elegantly attired husband, confidently posed with one foot resting upon a stone ledge, offers his wife a humorous analogy between marriage and military architecture, explaining that a fort and its adjoining parish "are married together" because one stands guard while the other prepares the soup. His wife responds by remarking that some men beat their wives, prompting the husband to conclude with the sardonic observation that "they say there are women who like that." Gavarni's characteristic blend of irony and understated social critique transforms what begins as lighthearted banter into a subtle commentary on nineteenth-century attitudes toward marriage, gender roles, and domestic authority. Rendered with delicate lithographic handling and economical yet expressive line, the composition demonstrates Gavarni's exceptional talent for conveying character through posture and gesture. The simplified landscape setting serves to emphasize the interaction between the figures, while the printed dialogue below enriches the narrative with the artist's signature combination of wit and social observation. Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, 16, distributed by Chez Aubert, Place de la Bourse, and printed by Aubert & Cie, this lithograph belongs to one of Gavarni's finest and most influential series devoted to the manners and domestic life of nineteenth-century France. Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression and attractive tonal quality. The sheet exhibits light overall toning, scattered foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with age. Light creasing, faint staining, and minor marginal imperfections are present but do not materially affect the printed image. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
