An original nineteenth-century lithograph on paper by the celebrated French illustrator and social commentator Paul Gavarni, from his acclaimed domestic series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Combining refined draughtsmanship with sharp psychological insight, Gavarni captures the quiet tensions and comic realities of bourgeois marriage that made his work so admired during the July Monarchy. This composition depicts a husband dressing while his wife confronts him with what appears to be another household grievance. The accompanying dialogue, printed beneath the image, revolves around unpaid bills and unwelcome interference from the wife's mother, culminating in the husband's dryly ironic retort. Gavarni's careful observation of posture, expression, and gesture transforms an ordinary domestic disagreement into an elegant study of marital dynamics, balancing humour with genuine emotional truth. Executed with subtle tonal gradations and fluid lithographic handling, the print exemplifies Gavarni's remarkable ability to convey narrative through understated expression rather than exaggerated caricature. The comfortably furnished bourgeois interior and fashionable costume firmly situate the scene within contemporary Parisian society, making the work both a humorous satire and an important document of nineteenth-century domestic life. Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, 16, and printed by Aubert & Cie, this lithograph forms part of one of Gavarni's finest and most enduring series devoted to the rituals, frustrations, and ironies of married life. Good overall condition, with a strong, well-preserved impression. The sheet displays light age toning, scattered foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with age. Small marginal imperfections and light surface creasing are present but do not materially affect the printed image. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
