Sōsaku hanga woodblock print "summertime" by masao ido of ryōan-ji zen garden, kyoto, 1995, 181/250, original japanese frame
in this luminous sōsaku hanga, masao ido frames one of japan's most contemplated views: the karesansui — dry landscape garden — seen from beneath the veranda of a kyoto temple hall. Two lacquer-black pillars anchor the composition like a proscenium, drawing the eye across raked white gravel to islands of moss cradling weathered stone groupings. Beyond a low earthen wall, a canopy of layered summer greens rises to meet the temple's tiled roofline — a single architectural detail that grounds the abstraction of the garden in a specific, real place.
ido's woodblock technique is at its most disciplined here. The gravel's parallel furrows are built from dozens of hand-cut, hand-printed lines — a technical feat that lends the surface a tactile, almost sculptural rhythm against the flatter planes of wall, wood, and foliage. It's a composition about stillness and structure: the geometry of the architecture holding the studied "randomness" of the rock arrangement in perfect tension, in the tradition of zen garden design itself.
titled "summertime," numbered 181/250, dated 1995, and signed in pencil by the artist, with his red seal in the lower right corner. Presented in its original japanese frame — h. 48 x w. 63 x d. 3 cm (h. 18⅞ x w. 24¾ x d. 1⅛ in).
about the artist
ido masao (井堂雅夫, b. 1945) is one of the leading figures of sōsaku hanga — the "creative print" movement in which the artist personally carves and prints the block, rather than dividing the work among separate craftsmen as in traditional ukiyo-e. Born in northeast china, he settled with his family in morioka, iwate prefecture, in 1946. He trained first in textile dyeing under yoshida kōho beginning in 1959, before turning to woodblock printmaking in 1969. Ido became especially known for his meticulous, jewel-toned depictions of kyoto's temples, gardens, and townscapes, rendering the city's architecture and seasonal light with a graphic precision that bridges traditional japanese printmaking and modern design sensibility. His work has been exhibited internationally — including in new york, chicago, vancouver, bangkok, and switzerland — and is held in institutional collections including the museum of fine arts, boston.
