This exceptional late 19th-century Chinese Peking weaving represents the pinnacle of imperial-era textile art, offering a refined aesthetic that appeals to collectors of antique rugs. The composition is dominated by a striking contrast between the luminous, expansive ivory field and the deep indigo border and motifs.

The central field utilizes a rich, saturated ivory color rugs palette, providing a perfect ethereal backdrop for the dramatic mythological scene. Two majestic Fenghuang (Chinese phoenixes) descend through a scattering of stylized navy blue clouds, symbolizing grace, prosperity, and the union of Yin and Yang.

Below the soaring creatures, the design anchors itself upon stylized mountains rising from turbulent, foaming waves—a classic representation of the cosmic axis and the earthly realm. The powerful use of mythical creatures places this piece firmly within the tradition of sophisticated bird rugs woven for high-ranking officials or the court.

The main border frames the scene with an intricate, continuous vine scroll pattern rendered in the same striking indigo blue, creating visual depth and containment. Its generous proportions make it an ideal room size centerpiece, capable of defining a sophisticated interior space while serving as a rare and captivating example of late Qing Dynasty artistry.
