This exceptional late Qing Dynasty weaving represents the pinnacle of Chinese courtly textile production. The restrained palette and open design distinguish it from earlier, more saturated styles, making it highly desirable among collectors of antique rugs.

The expansive central field is rendered in a luminous, pale yellow-cream hue, providing a striking contrast to the deep indigo and soft azure used for the motifs. The use of this sophisticated luminous ivory field allows the intricate blue detailing to truly resonate, highlighting the delicate, scattered floral sprigs and butterflies across the surface.

Centered dramatically within the field is a circular medallion featuring highly stylized botanical elements intertwined with the head of a mythical beast, echoing the traditional symbolism often found in Chinese dragon rugs. The surrounding allover pattern of individual blossoms and sparse branches emphasizes the mastery of negative space characteristic of the finest Peking workshops.

The composition is framed by multiple, complex borders, utilizing deep navy blue grounds adorned with stylized peonies and classical Chinese symbols. Given its impressive dimensions, this piece functions perfectly as a monumental room size rug, anchoring a formal living space or grand dining hall with its quiet authority and historical provenance.
