Substantial antique cast iron fireback featuring an elaborate raised figural scene surrounded by a molded border. The composition depicts several figures within a richly detailed landscape, including trees, radiating sun motifs, water and an unusual fantastical figure at right.
The deeply cast relief gives the piece exceptional sculptural presence. Its naturally aged surface has developed a beautiful muted green-gray verdigris and oxidation, with traces of brown iron showing through along the edges and high points.
Originally intended to protect the rear wall of a fireplace while reflecting heat into the room, antique firebacks are increasingly used decoratively as architectural objects. This example works particularly well displayed within a fireplace opening, as shown, but could also be mounted as a large wall plaque or incorporated into a garden or architectural setting.
The imagery appears historical, biblical or mythological in inspiration; the precise subject has not been identified.
A handsome decorative object with substantial scale, authentic age and an especially appealing untouched surface.
