Exceptional set of eight vintage American walnut armchairs by Charles McMurray Designs, featuring sculptural architectural frames and beautifully proportioned upholstered seats and backs.
Charles McMurray was an architect and designer who established Charles McMurray Designs in 1981, producing furniture from his Charlotte, North Carolina studio. His work was featured in architectural and interiors publications during the 1980s and 1990s.
This substantial set of eight chairs has a particularly strong presence as a group. The walnut frames have an appealing architectural quality, with angular arms, substantial construction, and handsome original finishes. The chairs retain their original upholstery, which shows the character and wear expected of vintage seating and could be updated according to the new owner’s preference.
Original Charles McMurray Designs manufacturer tags remain on a couple of the chairs, providing direct manufacturer identification for the set.

The walnut frames retain their original finish with scattered surface scuffs, scratches, and minor marks consistent with age, use, and handling. There are some more noticeable localized scratches/wear, but no major structural damage or missing components were observed. The original upholstery shows age-related wear, including staining/discoloration and some fraying along portions of the edges and piping. Upholstery replacement or updating would be appropriate depending on the intended use. The original seat webbing has deteriorated in places and will require future replacement. One chair has a loose arm that would benefit from tightening. Each chair is perfectly usable as is and presents well overall. less
