Description
A highly decorative British cat painting by Agnes Augusta Talboys RWA, combining six long-haired Persian cats with an elegant tea-table setting.
Talboys creates a playful narrative across the entire width of the canvas. Two grey kittens occupy a wicker basket at the left, while another watches from alongside. At centre, two white Persians investigate the tabletop and displaced cup and saucer. The composition concludes with a grey cat peering around the large floral teapot.
The arrangement has considerable interior presence without sacrificing the intimate character of an animal painting.

Decorative Appeal
The rich green tablecloth provides the principal colour field, complemented by silver-grey and creamy-white fur.
Touches of blue, pink and warm floral colour appear throughout the porcelain.
The dark background heightens the luminous appearance of the cats and gives the broad horizontal composition excellent wall presence.
Artist
Agnes Augusta Talboys RWA specialised in feline subjects and produced individual cat portraits as well as elaborate multi-animal compositions.
Her recorded works repeatedly incorporate decorative accessories including baskets, textiles, flowers and domestic objects.
Christie’s has documented comparable Talboys paintings of closely related proportions bearing signatures on both the painted face and reverse.
