This pair of vintage ceramic Foo Dog guardian statues captures the traditional, protective character of the mythological form, each figure seated upright with a strong, upright stance and an expressive, sculpted face. One figure displays an open, roaring mouth revealing detailed teeth, while its companion presents a closed-mouth expression, together embodying the classic "a-um" pairing found in traditional guardian lion statuary. Both figures feature richly textured manes built from tight, curling locks rendered in deep olive-green glaze, cascading down over muscular shoulders and framing expressive faces with bulging eyes, flared nostrils, and pronounced brows. Decorative curled tufts punctuate the chest and haunches, while a dramatic, upswept tail rises behind the pair, its layered, feathered texture echoing the mane's curls. The bodies are glazed in a warm ivory-cream tone that contrasts beautifully against the darker green and bronze detailing of the mane, tail, and facial features, with each paw displaying carved, articulated claws resting on a naturalistic base. The glaze throughout carries a rich, mottled patina that pools and deepens in the recessed carving, adding dimensional depth and genuine age character to the pair.
Display this pair flanking an entryway, fireplace mantel, or bookshelf as traditional guardian figures, continuing their symbolic role of protection and prosperity. Their detailed sculptural form suits Asian, Chinoiserie, Global Eclectic, Traditional, and Maximalist interiors. Each statue measures 5¼ inches wide, 3½ inches deep, and 6¾ inches high. Dust regularly with a soft, dry brush to reach the detailed crevices of the mane and tail, and wipe gently with a barely damp cloth as needed; avoid abrasive cleaners that could dull the glaze. The pair is in very good vintage condition, with an original glaze showing a rich patina consistent with age, minor surface wear, and small chips at the base edges typical for ceramic pieces of this age; the pair remains structurally sound and visually appealing.
