A striking mid-19th-century Victorian copper and brass samovar or hot water tea urn, circa 1860, attributed to England based upon closely comparable period examples.
The substantial 10-pound urn features an unusually elaborate bulbous copper body raised upon a cast brass pedestal base with four scrolling feet. A dramatic scalloped brass border surrounds the removable, deeply molded copper lid, which is surmounted by a turned white finial. Ornate brass mounts support additional white handle fittings, while an elaborate brass spigot and the original-style central heating chimney complete the form.
The remarkably lustrous copper and brass surfaces are as acquired and have not been polished by the current owner. Protected areas of the interior and underside retain extensive natural oxidation and patina.
No manufacturer’s mark has been located. The underside of the lid bears the hand-incised number “3004.”
A particularly decorative example of the Victorian tea urn form, with strong sculptural presence and beautiful contrast between copper, brass and white fittings.
