Gorgeous antique hinged room divider screen featuring four hand-carved elm panels. At nearly 8 feet tall, this stunning screen is a statement piece for any room. Carved fretwork and reilef panels feature geometric shapes, animals and other characters. The set of four unique panels is comprised of two pairs (as pictured, the two center panels are a pair and the first and last panel are a pair).
These screens were almost certainly used as architectural features (eg. courtyard screens or doors) as evidenced by old pins/bolts and places where different hinges were once present-- with current hinges being added later (current hinges consist of an L shaped pin that slides into two eye bolts).
We believe these screens to have been made circa mid to late 19th century. They show a great deal of character and patina that pictures simply cannot convey. There are some areas that have been repaired/reinforced over the years (see condition details below), but nothing that stands out as being obvious or out of place.
Sourced from a very luxurious estate in Park City, Utah.
Dimensions:
Each panel - 94" H x 21 3/4" W x 2 1/2" D (without hinges)
Assembled dimensions (as shown) are approximately 94" H x 84" W x 12" D
(assembled dimensions can obviously vary depending on how one chooses to angle the panels)
Condition:
Antique - Panels are heavy duty and still structurally very solid. They do show their age including some areas that have been repaired/reinforced over the years. The most notable spots are listed below, although none are overwhelmingly obvious or detrimental to the overall aesthetic.
-Some areas along seams that show through (see pics)
-One corner of the bottom/solid area (see bottom right corner of fourth panel in main picture) appears to have been replaced, although the matching patina seems to indicate this was done a very long time ago.
-One area on the back side of the lattice section on one panel looks to have been charred (superficially, still structurally solid).
-Two of the overlapping circles on on panel had a piece of the top circle repaired, although it's not noticeable (see second to last picture)
-The top of an arm on one of the people (in the small relief carving section on the apron of one panel) seems to have been broken off, although it's not incredibly obvious as it seems to have happened some time ago and has a decent amount of patina now.
We do our best to thoroughly document & present the condition of each piece, but please feel free to reach out with any questions!
