Antique French Empire commode, dating to the first half of the 19th century. Crafted in richly toned mahogany, the chest features a substantial black marble top above four drawers, including a discreet upper frieze drawer. The lower drawers retain round brass pulls and individual brass key escutcheons.
The case is framed by distinctive rounded columns with brass-mounted collars, terminating in substantial turned feet. Paneled sides, restrained neoclassical proportions and the architectural column treatment are characteristic of French Empire furniture of the period.
A particularly versatile antique chest with excellent scale, suitable as a bedroom dresser, entry chest or substantial console. Age-related variation, patina and wear are visible throughout and contribute to its character.
