About the Maker
Founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood, Wedgwood is one of England's most celebrated ceramic manufacturers, renowned for its innovation, craftsmanship, and distinctive Black Basalt stoneware. Introduced in the 18th century, Black Basalt became one of Wedgwood's signature materials, prized for its rich matte finish and sculptural qualities. This model was designed by John Skeaping, a prominent British artist known for his elegant depictions of animals and his contributions to Art Deco design. Skeaping's work is represented in major museum collections and remains highly regarded for its combination of naturalism and streamlined modern form.
About the Piece
"Tiger and Buck" is a striking Art Deco composition depicting a powerful tiger poised over its prey in a moment of dramatic tension. The sculpture exemplifies Skeaping's mastery of animal anatomy while embracing the sleek, simplified lines that define the Art Deco aesthetic. Executed in Wedgwood's iconic Black Basalt, the matte black surface enhances the sculpture's sculptural depth and emphasizes its bold silhouette. The combination of dynamic subject matter, refined modeling, and historic craftsmanship makes this one of the more desirable figural designs produced by Wedgwood during the twentieth century.
