The tender composition depicts a mother holding a young child while another rests beside her, rendered in the graceful, highly finished style for which Bouguereau became celebrated. Its muted palette of ivory, plum, dusty rose, and deep green feels especially at home in a traditional, romantic, French-inspired, or collected interior.

The ornate oval gilt frame is a major part of the piece’s appeal. Deep scrolling floral ornament surrounds the image beneath glass, giving the approximately 23-inch work considerably more presence than its scale might suggest. The oval silhouette also makes it particularly lovely mixed among rectangular artwork on a gallery wall or displayed on its own in a bedroom, dressing room, study, or intimate sitting area.

The reverse retains its original Hickory Manor, Reidsville, North Carolina, Made in USA label.

This is a later reproduction after Bouguereau’s original 1879 painting and is not represented as an original work by the artist.
