Striking vintage hand-carved wooden religious figure depicting Jesus Christ, rendered in a wonderfully expressive folk-art style. The figure is carved from solid wood and individually hand painted in rich shades of cobalt blue, red, gold, black and flesh tones.

Christ is depicted standing barefoot upon a simple rounded base, wearing a long red robe beneath a dramatic blue mantle edged with gold. His arms extend forward with both palms open in a traditional gesture of welcome and blessing. Deeply carved folds, individually articulated fingers and toes, and the strongly modeled facial features give the sculpture a distinctive naïve or primitive character.

The painted surface has developed considerable character from age, with areas of rubbing, paint loss, darkening and exposed wood creating an especially appealing old polychrome appearance. The back retains visible carving marks and natural surface irregularities, while the unfinished underside clearly reveals the solid wood construction.

Unmarked; artist and exact origin are unknown. Based on its carving, construction and aged painted surface, we believe the figure most likely dates to the mid-20th century, approximately 1940s–1970s.

Condition:
Good vintage condition with an authentically aged surface. There is scattered paint wear and loss, rubbing, scratches, small chips, surface irregularities and age-related cracking/checking to the wood. The underside has multiple drying cracks and an old edge loss, as shown. Please review photographs closely as the aged polychrome finish is an important part of the sculpture's character.
