Brownell's patented improvement in copper boilers, covered under U.S. Patent No. 39,881 and issued September 15, 1863. Hand fabricated from copper with four projecting brass pipe fittings, the model demonstrates Brownell's improved water heater construction emphasizing brazed joints in place of soft solder for increased strength and watertight performance. Accompanying the model are period patent materials including a handwritten identification tag, provenance card from the O. Rundle Gilbert Collection of Original United States Patent Models 1790-1890, linen patent documents, and the original fabric attachment cord. An unusual surviving artifact of 19th-century American invention and Patent Office history.
