The wheel-thrown stoneware vase has a beautifully balanced, bulbous teardrop form with a narrow neck and gently flared mouth. Its surface is defined by a rich, reactive glaze: deep olive-brown and charcoal tones are layered with mottled cream and gray, creating a dramatic drip-like effect over the warm reddish-brown clay body. The irregular transition between glazed and exposed clay gives the piece an organic, highly individual character.

Holleman was an American ceramic artist and designer whose pottery was exhibited nationally beginning in the early 1950s. Museum collections include ceramic works by Holleman at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and the Everson Museum of Art. Although he later became particularly known for his incised and mosaic-influenced work, his early ceramic practice emphasized the relationship between form and glaze, making this restrained, glaze-driven vessel an especially interesting example of that aspect of his work.

Incised “Holleman” signature to the underside.
Excellent vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and handmade studio pottery. No obvious chips or cracks visible.
