A striking vintage studio pottery bottle vase by Ruth Batkin, signed “RLB” on the underside. The tall, architectural form and densely worked surface give the piece a distinctly Brutalist and mid-century studio-craft character, softened by its warm ochre and brown glaze.
Standing an impressive 14 inches tall, the vase has a slender, architectural four-sided form with gently sloping shoulders and an irregular hand-formed mouth. The surface is richly worked with dense impressed and incised decoration—small looping, crescent, and floral-like marks that create an almost textile or tooled-leather effect.
A mottled palette of warm ochre, tan, and deep brown emphasizes the textured surface, with darker glaze settling into the recessed decoration. The restrained shoulder and neck provide a visual counterpoint to the highly patterned body.
The vase appears to be hand-built stoneware, likely slab constructed, with the slight asymmetry, hand-worked opening, exposed clay base, and incised signature reinforcing its studio-made character.
Ruth Lowenbraun Batkin (1924–1997) was part of a New York-area family deeply involved in the arts and cultural philanthropy. Her pottery is not widely represented on the secondary market, making signed examples particularly interesting pieces of mid-to-late 20th-century American studio craft.
A beautiful sculptural vessel displayed alone, with dried branches, or grouped with other modern studio ceramics.
