The vessel has a compact, sculptural form with softly faceted sides, a narrow rectangular opening, and an angular shoulder that gives it a distinctly modernist profile. The warm brown body is worked with dark combed and crosshatched surface decoration, creating an almost graphic patchwork across the exterior.

At the neck, a band of creamy off-white glaze breaks dramatically against the darker clay body, with natural variation and pooling around the rim. The combination of earthy materials, hand-worked texture, asymmetry, and strong geometric form gives the vase a clear Brutalist and mid-century studio-craft character.

The piece appears to be hand-built rather than wheel-thrown, with deliberate irregularity to the form and opening that reinforces its sculptural quality.
Ruth Lowenbraun Batkin (1924–1997) was connected to a New York-area family deeply involved in the arts and cultural philanthropy. Her ceramics are not widely represented on the secondary market. This vase was found as part of a group of her studio pottery, including pieces signed both Ruth Batkin in full and RLB.

A strong standalone decorative object with beautiful texture and presence despite its relatively compact scale.
