Large Antique Adams Brown Jasperware Stilton Cheese Dome and Stand, England, c.1880–1900
A substantial 4.3 kg English brown jasperware Stilton cheese dome and matching stand by Adams
This is a 19th-century Victorian Stilton cheese dome and matching under plate. The cylindrical bell features three small ventilation holes at the crown to regulate humidity for stored cheese, capped by an acorn-shaped finial. The exterior is richly decorated with finely modelled neoclassical sprigged ornaments, including panels of winged putti flanked by stylized palmette columns, and repeated bands of classical florets and acanthus scrolls along the rim and underplate. The unglazed, dark chocolate-brown stained stoneware ground boasts a dense, dry tactile finish closely resembling black basalt ware.
Specialized serving pieces like this cheese keeper combined utilitarian function with high Georgian aesthetics. The heavy, basalt-like stoneware body was deliberately favored for items of this scale, providing the thermal stability required for dairy storage while preserving the crisp, sharp relief work pioneered by the dynasty's founder.
The Adams family formed one of Staffordshire’s most influential and enduring pottery dynasties. William Adams (1746–1805), the founder of the Greengates Pottery in 1779, stands as one of the family’s most celebrated figures. Historically recognized as one of Josiah Wedgwood’s most talented pupils and closest confidants, Adams subsequently emerged as a formidable, high-tier competitor in the production of fine neoclassical ceramics.
Originally made for serving and storing Stilton cheese, this is an unusually large and heavy example, t also works beautifully as a decorative table centrepiece in a kitchen and is large enough to accommodate many cakes or other serving displays.
The underside bears an impressed/stamped Adams England mark.
Its generous proportions, strong neoclassical decoration and muted brown-and-white palette make it particularly suitable for traditional, country-house, Georgian-inspired or eclectic interiors.
Maker: Adams / William Adams & Sons
Country of origin: England
Period: Late 19th century
Material: Jasperware / stoneware
Colour: Brown and white
Dimensions:
Width: 28 cm
Height: approx. 26 cm
Weight: 4,285 g / approx. 4.29 kg
Condition:
Good antique condition with visible age-related wear. Tone of dome is slightly darker than the base.
Stoneware Body & Base: The stoneware body remains structurally sound. There are historic, old losses to the raised locating flange on the upper surface of the underplate base in one localized area, resulting from the heavy dome being repeatedly seated in the past.
.
Dome Rim: The lower rim of the cheese dome exhibits two shallow chips, invisible when the dome is closed.
Sprigged Relief Ornamentation: The white sprigged decoration shows excellent crispness overall, with only minor, negligible losses to the delicate raised edges of the relief. There is some minor surface discoloration and light staining to the unglazed white sprigging, consistent with age, handling, and historic exposure to dairy fats.
Tonal Contrast: A slight, subtle variance in color tone is visible between the dome and underplate base. This piece has an attribution mark,
