A striking mid-20th-century Florentine decorative tray in the traditional Rococo style, produced in Italy circa 1950–1970. Characterized by its elegant scalloped silhouette, richly ornamented surface, and warm palette of aged gold, ochre, olive green, and muted red, the tray is an expressive example of the decorative arts tradition associated with Florence and Tuscany. The tray features an organically shaped, undulating outline with softly lobed edges and integrated handles, creating a distinctly sculptural profile. The broad central field is decorated with an elaborate symmetrical arrangement of scrolling foliage, stylized leaves, floral elements, and quatrefoil-inspired motifs, rendered in fine incised and painted detail. A decorative border of repeated oval and dotted motifs frames the composition, adding rhythm and depth to the surface. The restrained combination of antique gold, earthy ochre, olive green, and touches of faded red gives the tray a wonderfully moody, timeworn palette. Its extensive surface wear, rubbed decoration, and variations in color are particularly appealing, revealing the passage of time and creating an authentic patinated and collected character. Rather than appearing newly manufactured, the surface has the atmospheric quality of a well-loved decorative object with decades of history. The reverse reveals a construction typical of Florentine decorative trays of the period. The underside is finished in a warm natural wood tone with visible grain, tool and handling marks, and a simple raised edge. The substantial construction and shaped perimeter are consistent with the gessoed, painted and gilded wood techniques traditionally associated with Florentine decorative arts.
The tray is distinguished by its handcrafted character, with subtle irregularities in the painted surface and decoration that contribute to its individual appearance. The softly distressed gilding and muted colors give the piece an appealing Old-World, rustic elegance, while its Rococo form lends a more theatrical decorative quality. Rather than being attributed to a single named designer, the tray belongs to the broader Florentine artisanal tradition, in which workshops produced highly decorative objects inspired by Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo precedents. Such pieces became particularly popular with the international market during the postwar period. Its combination of sculptural Rococo form, earthy antique palette, botanical ornament, distressed gilding, and authentic patina makes it especially versatile within both traditional and contemporary interiors. It would make a compelling statement piece displayed on a console, coffee table, ottoman, or shelf, while also retaining the practical character of a serving tray.
