Characterized by its exuberant silhouette, richly ornamented surface, and warm palette of antique gold, oxblood red, and ochre, the tray is an expressive example of the decorative arts tradition associated with florence and tuscany. The tray features a beautifully scalloped, undulating outline with integrated handles and deeply modeled ornamental borders. The central field is decorated with an elaborate arrangement of scrolling rocaille-inspired motifs, highlighted in gold against a deep red ground. Fine incised and raised details create a highly tactile, layered surface, while the combination of gilding and color gives the piece an unmistakably old world character. The decoration is particularly appealing for its handcrafted irregularity and aged patina. Areas of wear reveal the passage of time and add depth to the gilded surface, giving the tray the character of a collected antique rather than a newly manufactured decorative object. The result is an atmospheric statement piece with strong visual presence. The reverse reveals the construction typical of florentine decorative trays of the period, with a textured, molded surface and decorative linear detailing. The construction appears consistent with the use of gessoed and molded wood or composite material, techniques widely employed by florentine workshops to achieve the elaborate carved forms associated with earlier italian furniture and decorative arts. The underside bears a hexagonal export mark featuring a central cherub surrounded by the words “trade mark” and “made in italy.” this type of mark was used by various florentine producers and exporters for objects destined for the international market and does not, by itself, identify a particular designer or workshop. Rather than being attributed to a single named designer, the tray belongs to the broader florentine artisanal tradition, in which small workshops produced highly decorative objects inspired by renaissance, baroque, and rococo precedents. These pieces were particularly popular with the international market during the postwar period. Its combination of sculptural rococo form, saturated red lacquer, distressed gilding, and decorative patina makes it equally at home in a traditional interior or as a contrasting accent within a more contemporary, eclectic setting. A compelling decorative object and statement piece, it can be displayed on a console, coffee table, ottoman, or used as an elegant serving tray. See less
