An impressive and highly decorative pair of French gilt-metal figural candelabra, dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, each modeled with an elegant classical maiden supporting a finely ornamented three-light candelabrum. Richly detailed from top to bottom and subsequently electrified for use as table lamps, the pair combines the sculptural qualities of French figural bronzes with the practical appeal of decorative lighting.
Each candelabrum is centered by a beautifully modeled standing female figure in classical dress, forming the principal stem of the composition. The maidens are represented in long, flowing robes arranged in deep vertical folds, their garments gathered and ornamented around the waist. The treatment recalls the allegorical female figures, caryatids and classical muses that appeared throughout French decorative arts during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Their elongated proportions are particularly well suited to the tall architectural form of the candelabra.
The figures rise from substantial cylindrical plinths decorated with a fine engine-turned or crosshatched pattern, providing a pleasing textural contrast to the smooth modeling of the maidens above. Each cylindrical pedestal is bordered by cast gilt-metal bands and rests upon a substantial square base, giving the tall candelabra both visual and physical stability.
Above each maiden is an elaborate sequence of ornamental collars, knops and circular platforms enriched with classical motifs. The layered construction gradually transitions from the figural stem into the branching candle arms above, creating an elegant vertical progression rather than an abrupt change between the sculptural and functional portions.
Each candelabrum supports three candle branches. The central light rises vertically, while two scrolling arms sweep gracefully outward to either side. These curved branches are decorated with finely cast foliate details and terminate in circular drip pans supporting richly ornamented candle cups. The cups themselves are particularly attractive, with finely textured surfaces and classical borders that catch the light and emphasize the quality of the casting.
The symmetrical arrangement of the three lights gives each piece a balanced silhouette. Small scrolling volutes immediately beneath the branches provide an additional flourish and reinforce the distinctly French neoclassical character of the design. Although elaborate, the ornament remains carefully organized around a strong central axis.
The surviving gilt finish has developed an appealing warm golden patina, with darker areas settling naturally into the recesses of the cast decoration. This variation gives considerable depth to the figures, floral ornament, candle cups and architectural mouldings and is especially attractive on pieces of this age.
At some point, the candelabra were electrified for use as lamps, a common and practical adaptation of important nineteenth-century candlesticks and candelabra. Electrical fittings rise above the original central candle positions, together with faux candle sleeves and pull-chain switches. These fittings allow shades to be mounted above the candelabra, transforming them into substantial decorative table or console lamps while preserving the original three-light candle branches below. The visible wiring and fittings form part of this later conversion and could potentially be updated or conserved according to the requirements of their next setting.
Stylistically, the pair draws heavily upon the French neoclassical and Empire Revival traditions. Classical female figures had long been incorporated into French furniture, clocks, candlesticks and lighting as caryatid-like supports, while the combination of scrolling candle arms, foliate ornament and formal architectural bases continued to be fashionable throughout the nineteenth century.
The figural stems are undoubtedly the most compelling feature. Rather than being merely structural supports, the maidens turn each candelabrum into a small work of sculpture. Their classical drapery and upright poses lend the pieces a sense of refinement and ceremony, while the abundance of finely cast details rewards close inspection.
As a true decorative pair, these candelabra have considerable presence. Their substantial height makes them particularly suitable for placement on a large console, sideboard, commode, library table or mantel, where their symmetrical arrangement can be fully appreciated. They would also make dramatic bedside or end-table lamps in an appropriately scaled interior.
Dating approximately from the late 1800s to early 1900s, the pair represents the French taste for combining historical classical imagery with elaborate decorative metalwork. Their design incorporates elements of the Empire and neoclassical traditions while retaining the richness and exuberance associated with later nineteenth-century French decorative arts.
With their elegant figural maiden supports, three scrolling candle branches, richly ornamented gilt-metal surfaces, classical detailing and substantial architectural bases, these candelabra are both decorative sculpture and functional lighting. Their warm aged finish, impressive proportions and matched construction give them a commanding presence, while their later electrification provides an opportunity for continued practical use. An exceptionally decorative pair, they would bring unmistakable French grandeur and classical elegance to a sophisticated interior.
