Pair of Late 19th/Early 20th Century Neoclassical Bronze Candlestick Lamps
A handsome and substantial pair of late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century bronze candlesticks, subsequently fitted or designed for use as electric lights, displaying an elegant combination of neoclassical form, architectural detailing, and finely modelled bronze ornament. Tall and impressively proportioned, the pair has a strong sculptural presence and would be equally attractive displayed with shades as lamps or appreciated for the quality of the bronze work itself.
Each light is constructed around a long, tapering fluted bronze column, recalling the classical columns of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. The closely spaced vertical fluting gives the shafts a particularly refined appearance while emphasizing their height and slender proportions. The bronze has acquired an attractive naturally aged surface, with variations of deep brown, olive and golden tones that bring definition to the cast decoration.
At the upper end of each column is an ornamental capital composed of several distinct classical elements. A broad circular drip-pan is decorated with a radiating leaf pattern, above which sits a beautifully modelled gilt-bronze acanthus-form candle cup. The contrasting golden surface provides a pleasing highlight against the darker patinated bronze of the principal structure. Above are faux candle sleeves and electrical fittings, indicating their adaptation or construction for use as table lamps.
The lower portion is particularly impressive. Each fluted shaft emerges from an elaborate acanthus-leaf collar, deeply cast and modelled with considerable dimensionality. Beneath this is a contrasting gilt-bronze circular element decorated with classical leaf ornament, repeating the gilt details found toward the top and giving the overall composition a satisfying sense of balance.
The candlesticks terminate in substantial tripartite bronze bases. Three boldly modelled animal or paw-form supports radiate outward around the central column, each incorporating powerful sculptural details inspired by the classical decorative vocabulary. The feet rest upon a heavy triangular platform with deeply concave sides, providing excellent stability while reinforcing the architectural character of the design.
The quality of the casting is evident throughout, particularly in the sharply defined fluting, acanthus leaves, moulded collars and sculptural feet. Their considerable weight and substantial construction further distinguish them from lighter decorative examples.
Dating approximately from the late 1800s to early 1900s, this elegant pair reflects the enduring European enthusiasm for Empire and neoclassical design. The combination of dark patinated bronze with selectively gilded ornament gives them a sophisticated and luxurious appearance without becoming overly elaborate.
As a matched pair, these bronze candlestick lights are particularly effective for flanking a console, mantel, commode or sideboard. Their tall proportions, rich aged patina, classical columns and impressive sculptural bases make them both functional lighting and highly decorative objects in their own right.
