An elegant and finely proportioned pair of French Louis XVI-style guéridons, dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century and created in the manner of the celebrated cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler. Combining richly figured mahogany, gilt-bronze mounts and handsome black marble tops with subtle white veining, these tables beautifully capture the refined neoclassical character associated with Weisweiler’s celebrated eighteenth-century designs.
Each guéridon is surmounted by a circular black marble top delicately veined in white, providing a sophisticated contrast to the warm reddish-brown tones of the mahogany beneath. The marble is enclosed within a narrow gilt-bronze surround, giving the tables a crisp and luxurious architectural finish.
The most distinctive feature is the arrangement of slender gilt-bronze bamboo-form supports. Their carefully articulated segmented construction gives the tables an unusually light and graceful appearance while providing a strong vertical emphasis. This use of delicate columnar supports is closely associated with the sophisticated furniture produced by Weisweiler and subsequently became a recognizable element in later interpretations of his work.
The supports descend to an elegant concave-sided triangular mahogany platform, its perimeter accented with gilt-bronze moulding. The shaped stretcher provides stability while maintaining the open, airy quality of the overall design. Below are three short, gently curving mahogany legs terminating in elongated gilt-bronze sabots, completing the composition with considerable elegance.
These tables are described as being “in the manner of Adam Weisweiler” and should not be confused with documented eighteenth-century examples by the cabinetmaker himself.
Adam Weisweiler was a German-born cabinetmaker who established his career in Paris and became a maître-ébéniste in 1778. He developed a reputation for exceptionally refined furniture made for wealthy and aristocratic patrons during the final decades of the eighteenth century. His work is particularly associated with elegant proportions, architectural construction, fine gilt-bronze mounts and the sophisticated combination of luxurious materials, including mahogany, ebony, lacquer, marble and porcelain.
Weisweiler’s delicate guéridons and occasional tables are among the most recognizable forms associated with his workshop. Their slender supports, restrained neoclassical ornament and sometimes exotic bamboo-inspired details provided inspiration for important French furniture makers well into the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Dating from approximately the late 19th to early 20th century, the present pair reflects this important revival tradition. Their beautifully veined black marble tops, warm mahogany, gilt-bronze bamboo-form supports and elegant tripod construction create an exceptionally attractive and balanced design.
Both practical and highly decorative, this handsome matched pair would be equally successful as lamp tables, occasional tables or flanking tables, bringing the sophistication of French neoclassical design to either a traditional or contemporary interior.
