Late 19th/Early 20th Century Bronze Figure of Napoleon on Horseback
A handsome and evocative late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century bronze figure of Napoleon Bonaparte on horseback, raised upon a contrasting carved alabaster base and commemorating the Napoleonic era. The composition depicts Napoleon in his instantly recognizable military dress, seated confidently upon his horse and wearing his characteristic bicorne hat and long greatcoat.
The bronze is particularly appealing for its wealth of sculptural detail. Napoleon is portrayed upright in the saddle, his expression composed and commanding, while the folds of his heavy military coat are carefully modelled to create a convincing sense of weight and movement. Details of the uniform, saddle, stirrups, bridle and tack have all been crisply articulated.
The horse is especially well rendered, shown walking forward with its head lowered and one foreleg raised. Its flowing mane, muscular body and naturally positioned tail give the animal considerable character. The restrained pose creates a contemplative quality quite different from the more theatrical rearing-horse representations of Napoleon.
The bronze retains an attractive warm brown and golden patina, with subtle variations across the raised surfaces emphasizing the modelling and giving the sculpture a pleasing sense of age.
The figure stands upon a substantial carved alabaster pedestal, modelled as uneven rocky or snow-covered terrain. The pale stone provides a dramatic contrast with the dark bronze and gives the composition an appropriately wintry atmosphere. Prominently carved into the front of the base is the date “1813,” placing the subject within the turbulent period of Napoleon’s later European campaigns.
Dating from approximately the late 19th to early 20th century, this substantial bronze-and-alabaster equestrian figure is an impressive example of Napoleonic commemorative sculpture, combining historical interest, strong modelling and considerable decorative presence.
