These are particularly decorative pieces, combining the architectural refinement of Regency design with the weight and quality of solid, well-constructed metalwork.
Each pedestal is raised on a broad tripartite base, gently concave on each side and providing both visual balance and excellent stability. From the three corners rise tall, slender square-section supports terminating in beautifully modelled ram’s heads, a classical decorative motif frequently associated with French and English neoclassical furniture and objects. At floor level, the uprights terminate in finely cast hoof-form feet, creating a pleasing visual continuation of the animal motif.
The open framework is especially attractive. A complex arrangement of intersecting brass stretchers forms elongated geometric patterns between the principal supports, giving the pedestals an airy, almost architectural appearance despite their considerable weight. Small decorative finials punctuate the intersections, while the polished brass surfaces catch and reflect the light from every angle.
At the top, each stand supports a circular marble inset, surrounded by a substantial raised brass gallery. The marble provides a practical, durable surface while adding another luxurious material to the composition. These tops make the pedestals particularly suitable for displaying plants, urns, sculpture, porcelain, or other decorative objects.
Although visually delicate, these are heavy, solid and notably well-made pedestals. Their substantial construction and quality of casting are immediately apparent, particularly in the detailed ram’s heads, hoof feet, shaped bases, and precisely arranged framework.
With their combination of Regency and French neoclassical influences, rich polished brass, classical animal ornament and marble tops, this handsome matched pair has tremendous decorative presence. They would work equally well flanking a doorway, fireplace, console or window, or simply as impressive stands for a pair of specimen plants or decorative objects.
