The overall effect is one of remarkable elegance and refinement, with the restrained warmth of the walnut providing an attractive counterpoint to the richer gilt and polychrome decoration.
At the centre is a generously proportioned oval mirror plate, enclosed within a substantial moulded walnut surround. The timber displays a warm reddish-brown tone, enhanced by narrow beaded and gilt borders that emphasize the graceful oval form. The mirror glass itself appears to be of particularly good quality and has a pleasing period character. Its gently aged surface, with scattered marks and subtle imperfections, contributes considerably to the authenticity and decorative appeal of the piece without overwhelming its reflective quality.
The surrounding ornament is distinctly Adam in inspiration. Delicate open scrollwork extends outward from the upper portion of the frame, incorporating scrolling acanthus leaves and finely modelled foliate details. The symmetrical arrangement gives the mirror a strong architectural quality while retaining the lightness and delicacy so closely associated with the neoclassical taste.
The crest is especially impressive. Rising above the mirror is a classical urn-form support surmounted by an oval medallion depicting two classically draped figures in relief. The medallion is framed by beading and surrounded by naturalistic laurel foliage, above which rises an elegant foliate finial. This classical imagery reinforces the Adam-style vocabulary and provides an appropriately distinguished focal point.
Long pendant garlands descend on either side of the mirror, terminating in beautifully modelled classical urns. These are enriched with gilt highlights, green banding, red accents and finely detailed leaf ornament. Additional painted flowers appear around the lower edge of the oval frame, introducing an appealing note of colour and softness to the otherwise formal neoclassical composition.
A narrow horizontal shelf or architectural ledge forms the base of the mirror, ornamented with a repeated classical border. Beneath this is a particularly elaborate arrangement of symmetrical open scrollwork, centred by a descending acanthus motif and terminating in a small pendant finial. The repeated curves above and below create a pleasing visual balance around the strong central oval.
The combination of walnut, gilding, painted decoration and classical ornament makes this a particularly striking English decorative mirror. Although exuberantly ornamented, the design remains carefully balanced and symmetrical, displaying the elegance associated with the Adam revival. With its attractive walnut frame, intricate openwork embellishment, classical medallion, urns and floral details, together with its appealingly aged but seemingly good-quality mirror plate, it would make a commanding focal point in either a traditional or more eclectic interior.
