This magnificent example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving represents the refined aesthetic of the Peking style. Its enduring quality, characterized by a soft wool pile and carefully executed knotting, places it among the finest antique rugs of the period.

The deeply saturated field features a captivating shade of indigo, anchoring the entire composition. The sophisticated use of this rich blue color provides a dramatic backdrop for the stylized, cream-colored phoenixes and scattered floral sprays. These mythological creatures, rendered with sweeping tails, symbolize prosperity and grace within the traditional Chinese decorative lexicon.

Woven from high-quality wool, this piece retains exceptional pile integrity, a testament to its careful preservation over the last century. Its substantial dimensions qualify it as a true room size format, perfectly suited to define a major living space or formal dining area with historical elegance and commanding presence.

The design structure is framed by a complex series of borders featuring continuous scrolling vines and blossoms, contrasting sharply with the open field. While the central motifs are distinct, the overall distribution of the field elements and border density creates a visually cohesive allover design effect, characteristic of the finest output from the Peking workshop tradition.
