A striking early art glass vase by Ken and Ingrid Hanson of Hanson & Kastles, signed and dated 1995 and authenticated by the artist.
Ken and Ingrid Hanson began their collaboration in 1992, making this substantial 1995 vase an early example of a studio-glass partnership that has continued for more than three decades.
Standing approximately 12 inches tall, the hand-blown vessel is animated by vertical bands of pink, indigo blue, orange and soft mint green, dramatically finished with a vivid lime-green rim. The disciplined linear pattern is balanced by the natural movement and subtle irregularities of the blown form, creating a piece that changes character as it is viewed from different angles.
The Hansons' work draws upon traditional Italian and Swedish glassblowing techniques while embracing a distinctly contemporary approach to color and pattern. Their documented practice includes creating colored glass cane and murrini that are fused into vessels during the blowing process, allowing pattern and structure to become integral to the glass rather than simply applied decoration.
Ken and Ingrid Hanson have continued to build an established presence in American studio glass. Their work is represented by galleries specializing in contemporary craft and art glass, and in 2026 they were recognized by Bellevue Arts Museum with an Award of Excellence in Glass. They also participate in the Association of Clay and Glass Artists, reflecting their continuing presence within the contemporary studio-glass community.
The vase is signed Hanson & Kastles and dated 1995 on the underside. The attribution has additionally been authenticated by the artist. An especially appealing early example of the Hansons' work, combining beautifully controlled pattern with an exuberant color palette and substantial sculptural presence.
