Exceptional mid-century Flavio Poli for Seguso Vetri d’Arte sommerso glass vase, model #12431, in a striking layered combination of warm brown and luminous yellow glass.
Dating to approximately 1957–1961, the vase has Poli’s beautifully restrained teardrop form, with a substantial sculptural body tapering to an asymmetric pointed crest. Layers of colored and clear glass create remarkable depth, shifting from deep smoky brown through golden yellow as the vase catches the light.
This example has been identified as Seguso Vetri d’Arte model #12431 through period design/reference documentation. A reference image used in the identification is included with the photographs and shows the same distinctive teardrop profile and model number. The reference is annotated approximately 33 × 16 cm; this hand-blown example measures approximately 31.5 × 16.5 cm (12.4 × 6.5 inches), providing a particularly close dimensional correspondence.
Despite its elegant silhouette, the vase is exceptionally substantial, weighing approximately 10 pounds—a remarkable concentration of layered sommerso glass in a piece just over 12 inches tall.
Flavio Poli was one of the most important figures in postwar Murano glass design. His celebrated work for Seguso Vetri d’Arte is particularly admired for the sophisticated use of the sommerso technique, layering contrasting colors within clear glass to create sculptural forms of extraordinary depth and luminosity.
At over 12 inches tall and approximately 10 pounds, this is an impressive large-scale example with considerable presence. Beautiful displayed alone, where the changing layers of brown, yellow and clear glass can be appreciated from every angle.
