An Italian ‘Phantom’ wall sconce from the 1980s, designed by Jean-François Crochet for Sergio Terzani.
The silhouette is striking—an elongated Murano glass shade that gently flares at the top, rising from a sculptural dark iron base. There is something almost flame-like about it, especially when lit, casting a warm, diffused glow that feels soft and atmospheric rather than directional.
The glass is infused with gold aventurina, giving the surface a quiet shimmer even when unlit. At the base, the iron mount curves in a bold, almost calligraphic gesture, grounding the piece and adding contrast to the softness above.
Beautiful used alone beside a bed or in a powder room, and even better repeated in a hallway or stairwell for impact.

Jean-François Crochet (b. 1949) is a French designer known for creating atmospheric lighting and interiors that combine historical references with contemporary design. After establishing himself in Paris as a designer of fashion boutiques, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, he met Sergio Terzani in 1985 and soon joined Terzani, where they developed lighting guided by the philosophy of la luce pensata—"thinking about light."
His first design for Terzani, Antinea, paired wrought iron, Murano glass, and pietra serena sandstone, reflecting his appreciation for timeless materials and craftsmanship. This sensibility continued in later collections such as Tresor, introduced in 2007, whose shimmering metal discs evoke hidden treasure while transforming light into an element of warmth, movement, and character.
Condition: In very good vintage condition. This sconce has been professionally rewired by our team of restorationists with a new socket. There is a soft, even patina to the ironwork, consistent with age and use. Accepts one E12 candelabra base light bulb.
