A French ceramic tile coffee table by Roger Capron, crafted in Vallauris in the 1950s.
A field of hexagonal terracotta tiles sets the tone—warm, sunbaked, and quietly irregular. Running through the center, a band of glazed ceramic tiles break the rhythm: small, painterly florals in soft greens, yellows, and pinks, each one slightly different, as if placed rather than repeated.
A simple blackened metal frame holds it all in place—thin, direct, and architectural. Nothing decorative beyond what’s already happening on the surface.
Low, long, and grounded. It reads easily as a coffee table, but could just as well sit along a wall as a bench or anchor a narrower space.
Roger Capron (1922–2006) redefined ceramics in the postwar era, breathing new vitality into an ancient craft. After studying in Paris, he settled in Vallauris in 1946, co-founding l’Atelier Callis and working alongside contemporaries like Picasso and Jean Derval. Capron absorbed the region’s pottery traditions and translated them into modern forms—tiles, vessels, and eventually furniture that married utility with artistry.
By the 1960s, his tables were no longer mere surfaces but compositions—landscapes of glazed stoneware that carried the warmth of Provence into the modern home. They spoke to optimism: durable, joyful, meaningful. This piece, with its blooming motif, stands as both functional furniture and ceramic art, a lasting testament to Vallauris’ legacy and Capron’s singular vision.
Condition: This original Roger Capron coffee table is in very good vintage condition, with a natural patina to the metal base. Minor surface wear to the tiles, consistent with age and use.
