Color, structure, and rhythm define this cubist seascape by Patrick Leroy, created in France in the 1970s.
The composition is constructed through fractured planes and saturated tones, where sailboats emerge not as literal forms but as assembled gestures, triangular sails, faceted hulls, and shifting reflections. The bay is less a fixed place than a dynamic field of color, where water, sky, and landscape interlock in a continuous, angular flow. Trees and shoreline frame the scene, their forms simplified and rearticulated into bold, geometric silhouettes.
There is an immediacy to the palette. Deep greens, ochres, and reds are set against cooler blues, creating a vibrant tension that animates the surface. The boats, centered within the composition, act as anchors amid the movement, their pale sails catching light and guiding the eye upward through the layered space.
Painted in oil on board, the work carries a tactile density, with visible brushwork reinforcing its constructed nature. Signed by the artist, it reflects Leroy’s engagement with cubist principles, form broken down and reassembled, perspective multiplied rather than fixed.
The result is both structured and expressive. A seascape distilled into shape and color, it offers not a direct view, but an interpretation, one that invites the viewer to move through it, piece by piece, as the image gradually resolves.
Condition: Great vintage condition, with areas of wear and finish loss to the frame. Hanging hardware present along the reverse. Signed by the artist.
