This exceptional late 19th-century piece exemplifies the refined artistry of Chinese rugs, blending traditional imperial motifs with the robust structure characteristic of the period. The square format and generous dimensions mark it as a distinguished example of room size rugs intended for a prominent space.

The primary visual focus is the striking central medallion, rendered in a soft, pale blue field. Within this roundel, two meticulously detailed dragons chase the flaming pearl, a potent symbol of wisdom and power in East Asian iconography. The dragons' scales are subtly delineated in shades of tan and brown, providing textural depth against the cool blue ground.

The expansive main field is dominated by a luminous, warm tan, a hue often associated with the desirable salmon coral pink color rugs of the era, providing a sophisticated backdrop for the darker indigo and navy borders. The overall composition adheres closely to the geometric and restrained aesthetic of the mongolian design rug tradition, prioritizing structure over dense ornamentation.

The complex border system features layers of traditional Chinese fretwork and subtle floral sprays, executed primarily in deep indigo blue, which anchors the lighter central tones. This exquisite square piece, woven from high-quality wool, maintains remarkable pile integrity, offering collectors a superb example of antique rugs from the late Qing Dynasty. See less
